Trump won. Some posts on Chinese social media reflect the bittersweet reality of how the election of a global superpower impacts individuals and nations. Trump’s return to office after a four-year hiatus, surviving an attempted shooting, evokes a certain affinity for his character (if one can overlook his controversial actions and comments). Yet, the implications of a Trump presidency bring a sense of gloom for the prospects of their nation, hence subsequently, the individual. This sentiment, I believe, extends beyond China. This parallels the layer of complexity behind the straightforward popularity of Captain America. It’s a compelling story with impressive visuals. However, admiration comes with the implicit acceptance that the U.S. is the only nation that fights aliens and that Disney holds the most influential intellectual properties and graphics. This entails a slight compromise in national pride.
